PROBLEM:

The power steering reservoir leaks from the weep hole in the cap. The fluid capacity in the stock reservoir is very small. The fluid gets very hot and if the car is driven hard. The system overheats. In severe cases it causes loss of steering.

SOLUTION:

All German Auto has developed an all aluminum power steering reservoir made of 6061 aluminum with superior heat dissipation and increased fluid capacity with internal baffles so it doesn’t push any fluid out through the vent tube.

BENEFIT:

This AGA Power steering reservoir increases the fluid capacity from the factory 330ml to 800ml which is about three times the capacity of the factory part. Improves heat dissipation. Lowers power steering temperature and extends pump life.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AGA-E39-PSR-6061

These instructions are for experienced technicians only. This job should only be done by an experienced technician. If instructions are need to remove stock components refer to All Data, Mitchel or Factory Manual.

This example is on an E39 M5, it will vary on other E39 models. Changes must be made to fit each model. In some models you will need to trim the brackets that hold the existing reservoir and in other models it bolts right in using the supplied rubber mounts.

If the car has stock BMW air filter housing, remove top of left front air filter housing. Remove air filter. If car has Dinan cold air intake (or other) go to step 3.

Step 2

STEP 1

Remove left front fender lining (this needs to come out anyway to install power steering reservoir mounting screws and it prevents accidently drilling holes in fender liner).
Drill a 6.5mm or 1/4inch hole where it is marked in the picture above.

Step 2

STEP 2

With stock BMW air filter housing removed from car, install low rubber mount in hole just drilled. Trim stock mounting tab as shown in picture above.

Step 2

STEP 3

Remove stock reservoir. Trim bracket as shown above and remove outside section.

Step 2

STEP 4

If necessary trim off the stud on the inner fender.

Step 2

STEP 5

Remove the 2 stock mounts. Install the 2 new low profile mounts onto the stock location. Remove plastic clip and install medium rubber mount in existing outside hole.

Step 2

STEP 6

Hold reservoir in place and mark the location to drill inside hole.

Drill 6.5mm (1/4”) hole for the tall rubber mount to be installed in.

Tighten and secure reservoir.

Connect existing power steering hoses to new reservoir. Note two different sizes. Use new clamps if necessary (not supplied in kit).

Fill power steering reservoir with BMW recommended fluid until the fluid reaches the internal baffle (35mm down).

NOTE: DO NOT OVER FILL FLUID RESERVOIR.

Step 2

STEP 7

Connect breather hose to reservoir. Route hose down on the inside of the fender and down behind the bumper. Create one loop with the hose as shown on the outside of the car in the picture (for demonstration only) and secure with zip ties. The loop creates a barrier against moisture and is therefore important! Route the hose through the lower panel under bumper and trim the hose 10mm (3/8”) under the fender wedge.
